How to Extend the Life of your Dryer

As I stated in my last post How to Extend the Life of your Washer, Dryers also do not hold up as well as they did in years past.  Dryers used to have a life expectancy of 30 years or more.  Today's Dryers tend to breakdown within 3-5 years of usage.

Remember, like car dealerships, it is the service & warranties after the sale is where the $$ are made!

Dryers are abused as much as Washers.  Today's busy lives keep us from maintaining our Appliances.

Here are some steps you can take to Extend the Life of your Dryer.

Step 1.  Follow the steps on How to Extend the Life of your Washer

Step 2.  What goes in your Washer goes in your Dryer, so don't overload.  The benefit is that it will take less time for your clothes to dry, saving on your electrical bill.

Step 3.  Clean your lint screen on your Dryer at least after every load.  More often if drying towels or cotton items.  The number One cause of Dryer failures besides overloading, is vent system clogs or partial clogs.

Step 4.  Your lint screen only catches a large percentage of lint so clean the vent line from where it connects to the back of your dryer to where it exits your home at least once every 2 years.  If the length of your vent system is over 10 feet long, clean it more often.  If over 15 feet, you may want to invest in a vent booster that can be installed inline.

Step 5.  Clean the interior of your Dryer every 5 years.  This involves taking the Dryer apart, so you may want to have a professional do this.

Step 6.  Check where your vent exits and see if there is lint buildup there, in some cases you may find bird's have built nests in that area.

Just like you, if your Dryer cannot breath, it will die!  Or a least it causes components to break down causing dryer failure.

Now you may have been abusing your Dryer for a while now, so expect it to break sooner rather than later, but if you start today, you can still keep it from breaker sooner.

Follow these steps to insure that you're Dryer can breath and it will last a lot longer.  The Bonus is your clothes will dry quicker and your Dryer will last longer.

So PLEASE, stop abusing your Dryer!  It will pay you back in the LONG run!

Ways to Extend the Life of your Washer

Unfortunately Washing machines do not hold up as well as they did in years past.  Washers used to have a life expectancy of 30 years or more.  Today's Washers tend to breakdown within 3-5 years of usage.

In today's world, Washers are actually abused!  You must remember that they are "clothes" Washers.  No matter what the manufacturer advertises,  these Washers can only handle so much.  I have seen ads about washing 15 pairs of jeans, etc.  Yes, you can however it will not be long before your Washer will need repair.  Think about it, like car dealerships, the $$ are made after the sale with repairs and extended warranties!  So jam your Washer as full as you can get it and soon you'll be paying to repair or replace!

Here are steps to help you get the most out of your Washer and help it last for a good long time!

Step 1.  Don't Overload!  Overloading is the number one cause of washer failure.

Step 2.  Load your clothes in loosely to about 2/3 full.  This is approximately 10-12 lbs. of dry clothes

Step 3.  Only wash CLOTHES!  Remember Washers are not designed to wash Comforters,  Rugs, Tennis Shoes and other large items.  Take these items to a laundromat, which have actual Commercial machines.  Your washer will LOVE you!

Step 4.  Keep your washer clean!  Detergent can build up over a period of time and eventually that build up will break off and take on the appearance of oil on your clothes.  You can use baking soda, white vinegar as well as commercial cleaners to clean your washer.   Google It!  Lots of information on the web about cleaning your washer.

Now you may have been abusing your Washer for a while now, so expect it to break sooner rather than later, but if you start today, you can still keep it from breaker sooner.

Follow these steps to insure that you are not overloading your Washer and it will last a lot longer.  The Bonus is your clothes will come out cleaner than ever.

So PLEASE, stop abusing your Washing Machine!  It will pay you back in the LONG run!

FREE $50 - This is not a Joke!!

I know this is not my usual topic, but I just have to let everyone know about this great deal!

I was skeptical too, but decided to give it a try.  All I did was to go here Capital One 360 and open up a checking account and deposited $20 to the account (don't know if there is a minimum).  Got my debit card in the mail and used it at least 3 times within the 45 day time period and I got a $50 bonus deposited into my account.  I was ecstatic!!  FREE MONEY!  How can you beat that....

Then I started letting everyone I know about it like I am doing here about their Refer-A-Friend program and every time someone signs up I get $20!!  More FREE MONEY!  But that's not all....

After you click on the link Capital One 360 and open your checking account, you too can Refer-A-Friend and get a $20 bonus for up to 50 people you sign up! That's a total of $1,050.00 in your pocket FREE!

So go check it out for yourself!  It was worth it to me, just letting others know in my spare time!  Go for it!!

My Fridge Is Not Cooling

My Refrigerator is not as cold has it should be.... freezer seems to be working fine but my milk seems to be souring too soon.... what could be wrong....

Pull the front vent cover off the bottom of the front of the fridge. Is there a lot of lint type substance? This can cause the fridge to be 10-15 degrees warmer. Vacuum the coils will help keep it cooler. These should be vacuumed every 6 months if you have pets or at least once a year.

Look under the drawers of a Freezer on Top, Fridge on bottom to see if you find any water or in the bottom of the Freezer on a side by side refrigerator. You may have noticed water leaking onto the floor. This indicates the defrost drain is clogged up.....

Ok another air flow problem.... check the wall of your freezer... is there any frost? If so, then your refrigerator is not defrosting properly - there are generally 3 possible things that control the defrost system...

Check the fan inside the FREEZER section. If it is not working, then the air cannot flow from the freezer into the fresh food part of the refrigerator

The issue is "Air Flow Restriction" - Something is stopping the air from flowing from the Freezer to the refrigerator....

If there is NO Cold Air coming into the freezer at all, check to see if the compressor is actually running.  Pull the cover off of the backs side at the bottom behind the refrigerator.  Take a screwdriver and place blade end against the compressor and the other end next to your ear.  If is vibrating then the compressor is working which means it is doing all it can do and there is probably a sealed system blockage.  Time to replace the Fridge.  If the compressor is not vibrating, then it is probably the relay/overload system.  Good news, this should be fixable.
