How to Add Years of Life to Your Refrigerator's Door Seals

Here’s a simple trick that will most likely prevent your ever having to replace either of your refrigerator’s door seals. It becomes even more valuable if you own one of the newer models whose seals are no longer attached with screws, but “glued” on (a really dumb idea there, manufacturers!)

Once every year – make it a part of Spring housecleaning? – Anyone still DO Spring housecleaning? - wipedown the working surfaces of the seals with a damp cloth, and dry. Then apply a thin film of Petroleum Jelly to the hinge side surface of both seals. (ONLY to the hinge side working surface that contacts the cabinet, NOT the whole seal!). This allows the sliding face of the seal to, well, slide, across the hinge-side cabinet face, and prevent its twisting and tearing, the #1 cause of failure.

There was a time when new refrigerators, at least Frigidaires, arrived from the factory with this already done, but that was back in the late 70’s.....

Do this at least once a year along with vacuuming your coils will help your refrigerator last longer and work more efficiently!  You can get this brush to help with cleaning those coils, we can send you one for only $9.99 plus shipping.

Buyer Beware

How To Make Sure You Don’t Buy A Used Appliance Lemon

Have you ever bought something or heard of someone who had bought something used from someone, got it home and hooked it up only to find out that “it just don’t work”?

Well, I have. I get a lot of calls from people who have said, “I bought this fridge about a week or so ago and it was working when I got it at first and now it just stopped cooling. My milk has soured and the drinks aren’t cold enough and the guy told me that "it seemed to be working when they stopped using it…..”

Unfortunately, I have heard this story too many times over the years, especially within the last few years. With concerns about the economy, high unemployment, folks without jobs, etc. There is a tendency to “do what you have to do” in order to get by. And less face it, there are some unscrupulous people in this world.

In the last few years, there have been a lot of people running ads on craigslist and else where, “Will pick up or remove unwanted appliances and scrap metal for free”. These are probably good people who are trying to “make a living” and without knowing much about appliances, plug them up and they “seem to be working”, put them up for sale with an ad and sell it to somebody that does not know much about appliances either…..

Then you get it home and well, you know the rest of the story. So you ask yourself, “How can I be sure that what I am buying will be in good working order and will last me for hopefully a long time into the future?”

Answer 1: Get well educated about how appliances operate and how to test them to be sure that they are in good working order. The difficult part is that it is hard to know what is on the inside of an appliance unless you take it apart and inspect the inside.

Most appliances that have been used for a while are in need of a good cleaning, inside and out. Some having moving parts that need lubrication so they will last longer and some need some minor repairs that will help to insure that they will be in good working condition for sometime to come without needing additional repairs.

Answer 2: Buy from someone you can trust that has been learning and understands how appliances work from the inside out. Someone that knows that for example, a Dryer needs to be completely taken apart, cleaned, lubricated and tested to insure that it is operating properly.

There are a lot of used appliances available for sale and some are priced really low, but sometimes what you are buying is someone else’s problems and the old saying is “you get what you pay for”, but unfortunately, sometimes you don't.

Power Surges Reeks Havoc On Appliances

During these months of Storms, Lightning, Tornadoes, etc., we can experience power surges and when the power goes off for an instant or two and then comes right back on is when it reeks havoc on our appliances.

Refrigerators and Freezers need to be disconnected from power for at least 5 mins. and then reconnected. You can just look inside to turn it to the off position as well, again for 5 mins or so.

This gives the compressor time to de-compress so that it can restart without being under a strain. When power is disrupted the compressor will try to start, but because of the pressure it has built up from running, the overload protector kicks in an shuts it off. Then every few seconds it will try to restart until after a few minutes, it finally does start. What this does is to wear out the contacts on the overload relay and eventually burns it out. When this happens, the compress will just sit there and if you listen, you will hear it click on and then off, a few seconds later click on and then click off...

At this point it will stop cooling because the compressor is no longer working - No problem, just turn the refrigerator off so it don't burn up the compressor, find somewhere to store your food unless it is cold enough to keep the food cool - Just don't open the door much......

That brings us to the next problem with storms: When The Power Goes OUT!

If the power shuts down for a period of time, don't panic! Just leave the doors closed and don't open unless absolutely necessary and food should stay cool in the fridge for at least a few hours and food in the freezer can stay frozen for up to a couple of days, depending of the type of food.

Items such as ice cream will melt quicker than say a frozen turkey, but by leaving the doors closed then food will keep cold for a good while.

If it looks like power is going to be out for a while, you may want to look into getting dry ice or a power generator or some other source of storage.

Hope this helps you!
