When buying a Washer, here's what to look for......
Be sure you can plug it up to test it out and be able to hook it up to water! What you want to find out: 1. Is the water inlet valve ok. 2. Does it pump the water out ok. 3. Does it spin ok. 3. Does it agitate ok. 4. Does it go thru the cycles ok. 5. Is it leaking anywhere. 6. Is the Timer ok. 7. Is the Motor ok, etc.
1. Set the water level switch to lowest level. Turn the control knob (Timer) around to the beginning of the wash cycle and pull out the knob - Note some washers require lid to be closed to operate.
2. Open the lid (if water shuts off close lid) and then turn the water temperature switch to cold, then to hot, then to warm - if you can, feel the water change temperature and (or if water shuts off when you open lid) listen for the change in sound as you switch to each setting - there should be more water flowing on the "warm" setting than either cold or hot since you will have both sides of water flowing. If there is no change in temperature or no change in sound as you turn temperature switch ~ RED FLAG!! Water inlet valve or Water temperature swithc could be bad....
3. Do not fill with too much water. Stop Timer and turn around to spin cycle - Pull out knob. You need to determine that the water is pumping out and that it will spin. Note: most Washers must have the lid closed to pump and spin... once you determine that the water is pumping out and spinning - push Timer knob to stop.
4. Turn Timer knob back to beginning of cycle (so far so good). Pull out knob and let water flow once again. Let it fill up to the lowest level and start agitating. Once it starts agitating, then turn water level switch to next level and let it fill until it starts agitating again. Continue this process until it is full of water at highest level. You want to be sure that it stops at each level. If it does not, it could overflow, which indicates a bad water level switch or water inlet valve! RED FLAG!!
5. Open lid of washer. Some washers have two-piece agitators with top part only catching one way. If it does not catch, RED FLAG!! Agitator needs repair.
6. Now let it go thru the wash cycle. Is it Agitaging ok? Look for leaks all around the Washer, any leaks? Look for the washer to go thru each cycle, determine that it is agitating, draining, goes thru rinse cycle ok. One thing to look for in rinse cycle is that it is getting proper water temp. Some are cold water only while others will also have a warm water rinse selection. Check to see that the proper temp water is dispensing in the rinse cycle. Continuing to check for agitating, draining and spinning on each cycle.
7. You will know if the Timer is not working properly if it does not complete the cycle or if it continues to go to the next setting without stopping at the end of the cycle.
8. At the end of the cycle, turn Timer knob back around to the spin cycle and again run thru spin checking to see that the Motor is ok.... if it where bad, it would have shown up at some point thru the operation.
NOTE: This information does not include Electronic type Washers, Front Loaders, etc. ~ That get's into a whole 'nother can of worms that we will not get into!!

Tip of The Day ~ Buying a Used Dryer
When buying a Dryer, here's what to look for......
1. Pull the dryer out enough to look behind the dryer ~ Is there alot of lint around it? RED FLAG! FIRE HAZARD!! It is more than likely in need of a good clean up on the inside!!
2. Be sure you can plug it up to test it out ~ What you want to find out: 1. Is the Heating Element Cycling. 2. Is the Timer ok. 3. Is the Motor ok, etc.
3. Turn on the Dryer, push or twist start button, listen to the sound of it starting and let it run for approximately 30 minutes. There should not be any dragging sound. While it is running, either go behind the dryer or even better, go to the outside where the Dryer vent exits and check the air flow. There should be a good strong flow of air, enough to move an envelope when you hold it up to the air exit. (This is a good thing to do at home about twice a year as well.) If you do not get a good air flow, indicates vent is clogged and the dryer needs cleaning.
4. You are also wanting to know if the heating element is cycling off and on.... without any clothes, the dryer should start cycling off and on within 5-10 minutes. Check the heat coming from out of the dryer (you can do this from behind the dryer or outside at vent). It should get hot enough that you can barely hold your hand there for just a few seconds. Then it should cool down to where you can feel it getting cooler. If it never cycles off during the 30 minute test (could be heating element is shorted to ground) or it cycles off and does not come back on.....Cycling thermostat needs replacing.... RED FLAG!!
5. After about 30 minutes, open door of dryer, then shut door and restart. If it sounds like it is harder or dragging to start... something like mrrrrrr sound, RED FLAG! Motor could be going bad. If it is harder to start, let it run for another 20 mins, then recheck... If the motor is going bad, the longer it runs, the harder it will be to start until eventually, it will just buzz.... mrrrrrrrrr! RED FLAG!!

GE Heavy Duty Dryer - Classified Ad
Just found this site to advertise appliances that I have re-conditioned for re-sale.....
Check out this GE Dryer - Although a little older unit, it is in great shape and has been dissassembled, all parts checked and any repairs have been made. Cleaning these dryers is a must! Years of running will clog up the interior and create a Fire Hazard and must be cleaned before selling to someone else....
